Spring Break

We are half-way through spring break and we have Grandpa and Connie visiting!  I will leave posting about the loggers and our front 2 acres of woods for another day and just tell you about spring break fun.

The girls spent 4 nights sleeping out in the fort. 

We have dyed and hunted Easter Eggs.

We went to the movies, taught the girls to play penny poker, planted trees, and had a trip to the zoo!

It has been a fun spring break!

Weird Science

OK...it is that time of year when the girls have to come up with Science Fair Projects. 
First up was Kenzie's.  She wanted to know if her "sleepytime" camomille tea really helps to put her to sleep.  So, to test this she used Daphnia (water fleas) and had them swim in the tea and then measured their activity after swimming in the tea (and lipton caffeinated tea, fruity tea, and sugar water).  Below are some of the fun pictures.

Then Kenzie put together her posterboard and headed down to the University for the regional science fair (can't seem to find those pictures).
She brought home three awards this year:  Honorable Mention Overall in Biology, First Place in Medical Sciences, Second Place in Health Sciences.

After years and years of doing the exploding Mento's demonstration in the girls classrooms, girl scouts, youth events...Kayla wanted to know this year if:
1)  does it matter what kind of soda you use?
2) will different types of candy make the soda explode?

So, here is Kayla with all of her supplies -

 And here is one excited scientist!  Can't wait to see what she wants to do next year!

Scrappy placemats

What to do with all of those left over scraps?  Time to make some new placemats.  A project so easy that each of the girls made their own.  All you have to do it be able to sew a straight line.

All Hearts

OK...so this is an old quilt project from February but I figure I should post my pictures in order of projects so here they are from February.  These are another quilt guild project.  You put hearts onto muslim squares and when one of the quilt guild members gets sick or goes through a rough time then you give them a "heart" and they can then use the different squares from each of the members to put together a quilt.

It started with the material and lucky for me it was around Valentine's Day so there was plenty of pink and red to choose from.  Well, actually Joe picked it up for me when he was in Spartenburg shopping one day.

The next step was cutting out the hearts in two sizes.  LOVE that iron on fusible webbing!

Then it was on to the fun part arranging everything.  First the basic simple design:

Then the creativity kicked in:

Now onto the time consuming part...all of the topstiching...I might someday finish all 12 of them...
