Kenzie's first quilt

As I was pulling out my fabric stash Kenzie came in and pulled out a "fabric pack" that Grandma had put together for us several years ago that included some fusible butterflies.  So, we are now off and running on putting together 2 small quilted wall hangings using these fusible butterflies.

Above are the pre-cut fusible butterflies and our coordinated fabrics to start off the project.

Coordinating blue (sky) and green (earth) 9 patches were the chosen quilted backdrop for the colorful butterflies.   Then she was off and sewing.

 Kenzie's very first quilted square!

The four quilted squares are finished - ready for Step 2.....maybe tomorrow......

Scrap Quilting

Project #2 for the Quilt Guild is a philanthropy project out of quilt scraps.  I was handed 6 muslin squares with a center colored strip at the last quilt meeting.  The goal was to add strips of scrap fabric and then everyone's scraps squares will be combined into 6 quilts to donate to a local organization.
Step #1 was to go through all of my fabric stash and identify scraps....what a big pile.....
See my pile of scraps strips at the back of the picture...I didn't realize how many I had and how long it would take to iron each scrap.  Once the scrap piles were made it was time to start grabbing strips, pinning, and sewing them together.

Here are the finished blocks.  What a wonderful mix of colors.  I will be curious to see how everyone's scraps come together into a final project.

I have so many ironed scrap strips left over that I thought it would be fun to use them to make some extra placemats.....when I have some extra free time.

Quilting: January Edition

Life is strange sometimes and this is one of those times.  I was sitting at work after returning from the holidays when a co-worker came in and asked me if I quilted.  She then showed me a quilt magazine with my name and old Columbia address on it.  I had cleaned out when we moved and donated a bunch of quilt magazines to the church quilt group.  My co-worker had bought the magazine at a fundraiser.  Long story made short, she is part of a quilt guild and asked if I wanted to come to the meeting last Thursday.  I went along and below is the result of the meeting.....

The guild has several projects that they complete over the year.  One is to make ornaments for a Christmas tree that they decorate in December.  Everyone has to make 10 sewn ornaments (or 1 ornament a meeting for the next 10 meetings).  As the queen of efficiency I figured I would mass assemble my 10 this holiday weekend.  I went into my craft closet and pulled out my supplies.  Felt, buttons, and ribbon were on the list of supplies.  I pre-cut everything and then called the girls in to help out (never too early to get them involved).

The girls had the job of designing the ornaments.  Here are their designs.

Next up was the hand-stitching the tops, stitching the top to bottoms, stuffing, and adding the hanger....It was fun to have the girls help out and a great time to teach Kayla how to hand sew!  Below are the finished products:

All in all:  A great family project!  Low cost, short time, simple stitches!

Can't wait to have the girls help me with next months project!

Snowman Party

The New Year is off to a busy start.

Oldest daughter and I headed off to Ohio for a Science Olympiad tournament.  Joe had to pitch-hit and taught the Brownie Troop First Aid skills.  We are selling Girl Scout Cookies if anyone wants to pre-order!

This weekend was Birthday Party for the youngest.  The theme was "Snowman".  Of course, the cake had to be a snowman.

This meant that Joe spent the last week cleaning out the garage, getting all the old stuff off the walls of the garage, and scrubbing the floor of the garage.  Then he went through and painted the walls a light blue (left over paint we had) and painted the floor a light brown (leftover paint).  Once again we have a "party room" for all of the birthday and holiday kids parties.  And YES, we still park in the garage in between "parties".

For party games we had stick the nose on the snowman and dress the snowman. The craft was making snowglobes out of baby food jars and plastic snowmen and polar bears.

The cutest snowgirls!

A party wouldn't be complete without a pinata!
